Halifax County Believes In Education

In Halifax County, there are three independent
school districts serving more than 14,000 public school students, each offering a wealth of unique and outstanding programs. In addition, Halifax Community College prepares individuals for the workforce through vocational, technical, college transfer, and continuing education learning opportunities.

Halifax County Schools - The largest school district in the county with 6,300 students,  Halifax County Schools offers a number of outstanding programs that are tailored to the individual student with an emphasis on technology and student preparation for the global economy.

Weldon City Schools - With 1,500 students, the Weldon City Schools operates from the philosophy that a quality education will provide students the opportunity to: develop the ability to think logically, communicate effectively, develop a positive self image,  and develop an understanding of civic responsibility in local, state, national and world communities.

Roanoke Rapids Graded School District - consisting of a pre-school center, two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district's total student population is just over 3,000 students, or about 800 per school. It is one of a few non-consolidated community public school systems remaining in the State.  Standard-ized test scores are consistently above state and national averages.

Halifax Community College - With over 1,900 full-time and 6,000 continuing education students, Halifax Community College has stepped to the forefront in providing distance learning opportunities with access to the most up-to-date technologies in computers, telecommunications, and multi-media information. HCC is part of the state's Information Highway, linking many of our institutions through an interactive network. Teachers and students are able to communicate from college to college without ever leaving the classroom, providing new learning opportunities and venues for students, faculty, staff, administration, and friends.
 

Health Care

Halifax Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is a private, acute care hospital located in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. HRMC offers over 800 highly skilled medical personnel, 206 beds, state-of-the-art technology and a full range of acute care services including obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, urology, medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry and ophthalmology. Rehabilitation services are available to both inpatients and outpatients.

Our Community Hospital (OCH) in Scotland Neck is a 100-bed facility with 20 beds for acute inpatient care, 20 beds for assisted home care, and 60 beds for long-term care. Its primary service area is the southern half of Halifax County and portions of three contiguous counties. OCH typifies the traditional small rural hospital that has made the transition to become a critical access hospital.

Additionally, Duke Medical Center, Wake Med, Pitt Memorial Hospital, the Medical Colleges of Virginia, and other first-class medical facilities are located a short distance away.

Housing

Whether you choose the city life, a rural setting, or Lake Gaston living, Halifax County offers just the right home for you and your family. Housing in Halifax County is consistently lower than the national average. The average cost of an existing home in the area is $80,000, compared to a median of $160,000 for the U.S. The average cost for a home on Lake Gaston is $250,000. There are also ample rental accommodations located throughout all areas of Halifax County.

 

Halifax County Attractions

There is always something to see or do in
Halifax County.  Our communities offer a wide array of parks, museums, historical sites and entertainment areas that are open year-round. A number of activities are free or cost only a few dollars.  Many of these attractions are unique to the Halifax County area.

We're home to Historic Halifax, the site of the F
ourth Provincial Congress' adoption of "Halifax Resolves" in April of 1776.  With that action, North Carolina became the first colony to take a bold, official step toward declaring independence from England.  You can step back in time in Historic Halifax and experience the lifestyle of those early revolutionaries.  A Visitor's Center and Museum offer free guided tours and a unique archaeological exhibit.

The Halifax County area is also an active and diverse arts and entertainment base for the region. The Tow
n of Littleton is home to the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center, North Carolina's busiest community theatre. In Roanoke Rapids, the Canal Arts Center is host to visual, performing and literary arts as well as cultural and educational programs
